Visual Communication: Studio Brief 1 (Need a Hand?)

To address the problem through the form of intervention we plan to use large cardboard cut-outs to either stage a public performance (a large grasping hand chasing a large bottom or crowd).

To create the large hand, I roughly drew the general shape on a unfolded cardboard box and cut it liberally. I initially hoped to spray the surface white, but the spray paint proved unreliable and Sophie eventually elected to paint using generic acrylic. After a couple of coats I detailed the fingers and shading using ink applied with the largest brush available.

I was quite surprised how well executed the whole process was, I encountered no mistakes other than a mild paper-cut. This was probably due to familiarity with the hand design.

I also created a stencil for the signage, rather than painstakingly attempting calligraphy I chose to use a stencil and copy the font of my choice, Molot.

Sophie assisted in the cutting process of the stencil while Lewis constructed the large cardboard buttocks. The group is being tangibly productive, and it is most encouraging.
