Visual Language: Collage

I was quite anxious to use collage in visual skills because of it's subversive qualities which compliment the horror genre. Horror, much like comedy uses subversion to illicit a response from the audience.
Subversion is used to generate surprise and shock, while within comedy it is executed for hilarity. There is however a thin line which separates the two; clowns are a good example as they are designed to look comical, and are yet are often associated with phobia.

Thus, in this week's response I hopped to create imagery which is both creepy and funny.
Using masking fluid I blotted out faces that I found amongst my amassed collection of imagery, upon the blank faces I drew skulls or zombie features.
I found that newspapers were a particularly good source for portraiture, though somewhat lacking in variation.

I was most content with this result, the distorted face is hideously comical and boarder-lines on the uncanny valley.  I am glad to say that this investigation has been most bountiful. I hope to use collage to a higher degree in future project responses.
