Visual Language: Tone, Mark & Pattern

For the next stage of the brief we introduced the use of line to suggest the nuances of light and dark. I have continued to use a selection of felt-based pens, using the brush to create gestural lines whilst investigating the use of ordered cross hatching to build the impression of dark areas.

By extensively repeating imagery I can improve the accuracy of my drawing, I find that highly applicable to portraiture, as small differences will often result in a vast array of differing faces, figures and gesture.

Linear work can also be used to suggest depth or direction, especially in regards to fabric.
Inevitably I used ball point pens for some studies, however I used white pencil to highlight areas to suggest the casting of direct light. I enjoyed working on the brown paper as it appeared to take to the ink rather well, I shall continue to use it in future.
