Visual Language: Shape

I was initially quite enthusiastic regarding this weeks' focus in shape. A previous exploration with the use of masking tape and ink was most successful and I have gladly bounded at the chance to pursue it further.

By masking areas off I tape I am forced to think about composition and framing as the resulting negative space limits the use of detailing. I have also found that mistakes and incongruities have made each image quite unique, this would not have occurred in a digital format.
The below image of the Bride of Frankenstein is probably the most successful piece, this is due to my repetitive studies of her face and figure, resulting in more refined imagery. The dynamic minimal shape which forms her body compliments the relatively detailed facial features.

This recent image based on the poster for "The Thing (1982)" is quite intriguing as the energetic brushwork helps to elaborate the explosive imagery.  Had I stumbled upon this process in the first brief for visual skills I would have certainly applied it in that instance.
