Applied Illustration: Contextual Reference & Early Mock-Ups

Below, I have gathered some examples of playing cards. I deliberately chose a selection that are diverse in aesthetic so that I might refine my source of reference as I continue. I currently favour the traditional designs as they are the most recognisable.






As ever, I frequently refer to the portraiture work of Phil Noto. His gestural line work excellently renders characters even on a small scale. As the portrait portion of the cards will obviously be viewed on a small scale I shall need to make use of a similar method.
