Visual Communication: Studio Brief 2 (Greetings from...)

For this brief we have been given the instruction to create 4 vaguely post card sized (210mm x 120m) post cards for world cities, which assumingly means that they should be recognisable. Though after discussion with the tutors it was apparently open to fictional locations.

Initially I hoped to portray locations from science fiction and fantasy, such as Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back or Minas Tirith from the Return of the King. After internal debate I chose to use real world locations, mostly due to the availability of reference material.
I have found that when using wet media in the sketch book it is better to use an external stock, and then stick it in... so that I don't have to enduring drying times before I can turn the page.

One idea involved taking examples of brutalist architecture around the globe, however I was faced with the issue that these buildings aren't generally representative of their location. In-fact brutalism is essentially the unapologetic disregard of historical and geographical context.

I was struck with the idea that cities seem to have quite distinctive lamp-posts, but before becoming too absorbed in this idea I moved on.
