Visual Skills: Studio Brief 4 - A Matter of Opinion (Initial Ideas)

In this brief we have been given greater room to manoeuvre, a large choice of quotes and open use of media has allowed for each student to pursue a perhaps more liberal application of their independence.
I have chosen the explore the quote "Culture used to be the opposite of Commerce."
This was not a particularly difficult choice to make as I am quite interested in the consumerist attitudes which have formed popular culture. Instead of portraying the described opposition of culture and commerce I have instead decided to explore the inference of the quote, in that culture and commerce are current the same symbiotic entity.

A criticism of the previous weeks' brief was that I had produced a great quantity of visual concepts, but in the process had lost some amount of focus. In attempt to tackle this issue I have limited my time in indea and concept production and have instead focused more on particular ideas.

The concept which I have been most enthusiastic with involves a large machine which squirts out a small amount of culture into a condensed can, which is reveled to be part of a gigantic landfill. I thought that this imagery was pretty strong in commenting on the disposable nature of modern popular culture.

During my recent media experimentation in visual language I have discovered a method which involves creating negative space with masking tape and generously applying black ink onto the uncovered areas. I find this process most satisfying, however the current tape of choice is quite damaging to the surfaces I have tried it on and tend to rip and tear.
